The Goose, the Fox & Palermo

Palermo Palermo, from Pina Bausch is online, thanks to the Pina Bausch Foundation. It was since November but only with quarantine did I notice. You should watch it when you have time. It is a tale from 1989, but could be a tale of 2020. I watched it in March 2019 in Wuppertal, lucky to share the experience with two very dear friends, we spent the night in a peaceful village near Pina’s hometown and it was magical. Somehow I didn’t write a post about it then, I couldn’t feel like I could say anything better than what I read in Norbert Servos’ book. Even you are not too keen in watching it in full, play it starting at 2h12mins… A timely time to be with Italy in heart.

! Spoiler alert ! Do not read from now if you don’t want them

The river near Solingen

In a field where a herd of beautiful young geese were, a fox comes and says:

“I have come here to eat you all.”

And then the geese get a shock and they jump, they cry and they complain that they are still so young and must already die.

The fox laughs and says “Yeah, that doesn’t matter, there is no mercy, you should all die”.

And then one of the geese comes to it and says: “Yes, but please let us at least make our last prayer so that we don’t have to die with our sins. We will all put ourselves in a line for you so that you can see better which of us is the fattest.”

“Yeah”, says the fox, “alright, that doesn’t bother me, you can make this last prayer, I can wait”.

Then comes the first goose comes, puts itself there and starts with their prayer, which is for a geese: “Ga, ga, ga, ga, ga…”.

But that took so long that the second didn’t wait, it put itself next to the other and starts with its prayer “ga, ga, ga, ga….” And the third didn’t wait either and after a certain time they all stood in a line and prayed….

Normally this story should be continued until the geese finish to pray, to the end.

Yes, but…the geese even now are still praying.

Applause – for Pina, for Italy, for everyone too
